Volkswagen Transporter overview

Volkswagen's long and varied history began in 1937, with Volkswagen meaning ""folk's wagon"" in German or the ""people's car"". The Volkswagen Transporter was based on the Volkswagen Group's T platform, which is now in its sixth generation (T6) and is the best-selling van in history with over 12 million units sold worldwide.

As Van of the Year in 2016 by Auto Express, the Transporter also won best International Van of the Year, Trade Van drivers Van of the Year, Vansa2'z Van of the Year and fleet worlds best new Van of the Year. There's been many different variations over the years from vans, minivans and minibuses to pick-ups and of course VW campervans. The Transporter story began in 1950 with the first T1 derived from the Beetle. The Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), also known as the T25, or Vanagon in the United States appeared in 1979, with the T4 Transporter in 1990, followed by the T5 in 2003.

Today's VW Transporter panel van is available in two wheelbases and three roof sizes to create a load compartment volume of 5.8 to 9.3 m³, with a potential payload of up to 1,301kg.
